Everyone has heard of Rolex. The Swiss company is renowned worldwide for it's style, quality, and price. Rolex watches have become a status symbol for the rich, with Rolex watches costing up to and over one hundred thousand dollars. However, Rolex watches are more than just pretty timepieces. Rolex has endured for years because of hard work, dedication, and fine craftsmanship. In fact, Ian Fleming, creator of the legendary super spy James Bond, gave the character a Rolex Oyster Perpetual in his series of spy novels.

Popular Models

  • Rolex Oyster Perpetual – The watch preferred by James Bond, the Oyster Perpetual has been a symbol of quality and greatness for years, and because of it's timeless design, it will be for years to come. Produced in steel and 18 ct yellow gold, the Oyster Perpetual comes in two elegant designs, both with an Oyster bracelet, self-winding, and waterproof up to 100 meters.
  • Oyster Professional Explorer – It was created exclusively for the ascent of Mount Everest in 1953 by John Hunt and his team of climbers. The Explorer 2 was created later, with the same thing in mind: to aid explorers who navigate rough terrain. The Explorer 2 comes equipped with a chronometer, calendar, and a special 12 hour hand to help keep track of different time zones. Both models are self-winding and waterproof up to 100 meters.
  • Cellini Line – The Rolex Cellini offers beauty and class for the person wanting to turn heads around the room. Models like the Cellinium and the Cestello are excellent examples of the craftsmanship that Rolex has to offer. If you're looking to stun, look no further than the Cellini line.

Why Rolex Watches Are Special

Rolex has so many accomplishments under their belt that it would be impossible to list them all in such a small space. Among those accomplishments are numerous firsts, such as the first self-winding watch, the first watch with a date on the dial, the first waterproof watchcase, and the first dual time zone watch. Perhaps their most important accomplishment is being the first watchmaker to earn chronometer certification for a watch. Rolex also participated in the development of the first quartz watch movements.

Rolex has also made a name for itself by making watches to aid in deep-sea diving, mountain climbing, and aviation. As stated earlier in this article, the Explorer and the Explorer 2 were created with the explorer in mind – hence the name. They're made to survive in even the roughest conditions, assuring reliable timekeeping wherever you happen to trek. Another watch made in the same vein is the Oyster Perpetual Sea Dweller 2000, made in 1971 for deep-sea divers. It even featured a helium release valve for releasing helium gas build-up. Rolex also released the GMT Master watch at the request of Pan Am airways. The GMT Master helps pilots keep track of time when piloting transcontinental flights.

Hi Cooper,

The worth of such a watch is going to vary greatly, depending upon market demand and condition of the watch. Your best bet would be to find a local antique watch dealer or dealer that specializes in Rolex and get a quote from him or her. Some of these watches are worth thousands and others not as much. It varies quite widely.

Hi Rev,

Oh my! Dogs are horrible about chewing. We have a Golden Retriever and two mini dachshunds and they all chew. Your best bet is to contact Rolex directly and inquire about purchasing a new box. You can email their customer service department through their website at:

You can also find a complete list of Rolex dealers on the site to see if there is one near you.
