With hip, up-to-date styles that can be worn with the latest clothing trends, N.A.W.C. watches are a favorite with fashionistas and other style-conscious individuals. Read on to learn more about this interesting business group. The Movado Group, once known as N.A.W.C., or North American Watch Company, has made a name for itself with its Movado brand and its several licensed brand names.

N.A.W.C. Early History

N.A.W.C. watches have been around since the early sixties, when watch salesman Gedalio Grinberg fled Castro's Cuba and set up shop in New York under the name North American Watch Co. He began selling costly Piaget watches, as he had in Cuba, but discovered that the New Yorkers of the time found the elegant watches to be far too expensive. Undeterred, Grinberg put an advertisement in The New Yorker magazine, calling Piaget watches the world's most expensive watches. That tiny ad managed to grab attention and suddenly buyers showed interest in purchasing the watch as a status symbol. For that reason, Grinberg is credited by many with introducing the idea of watches as luxury items to Americans.

Movado Group

In 1983 N.A.W.C. acquired the ailing Movado, a Swiss watch company with over 100 years of history that was on the verge of closing down. N.A.W.C. managed to turn things around for Movado and made the company profitable once again. The company went public in 1993 and in 1996 the name of the company was changed to the Movado Group. The Movado Group has carved out a niche as a company that supplies reasonably priced, yet fashionable watches. The company runs more than 20 Movado boutiques which sell items for the home as well as watches. The watches are sold through the firm's own sales force as well as distributors.
