The company was founded in Switzerland in 1881 by a 19-year-old named Achille Ditesheim. He started the company with six watchmakers on his staff in a small workshop in the town of La Chaux-de-Fonds.
The word "Movado" means "always in motion" in Esperanto. Esperanto is an international language invented in 1887 by a Polish doctor named L.L. Zamenhof. It is considered an artificial language.
