From LoveToKnow Watches

Cyma watches are classic timepieces that appeal to people of all ages and lifestyles. Both collectors and people who want a quality Swiss watch will like Cyma watches. Although Cyma watches are considered fine jewelry, Cyma offers a large selection of watches in a variety of styles at different price ranges. Cyma is one of the most popular luxury watches in Europe and more recently, in the U.S.A. What is the appeal of this traditional Swiss watch?

Cyma Watch History

Cyma traces its early origins from a small watch company founded by the brothers, Joseph and Theodre Schwob, of Schwob Frères and Co. in 1862. The Schwob brothers named the company cyma, the French word for summit. In early years, the company had a staff of 40 people and 55 machines that together produced about 40 watches a day. Yet, it was not until 1892 when the brothers partnered with Frederic Henri Sandoz, the owner of the watch wholesale company, Henri Sandoz and Cie, that the business expanded. Under Sandoz's leadership, the company became the Cyma Watch Company and built the famous Cyma factory in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland in the Jura Mountains. La Chaux-de-Fonds is near Le Locle. Both towns were the center of the Swiss watchmaking industry in the 1800's.

By 1903, Cyma introduced an extra slim pocket watch that featured lever movement. The watch won the prestigious Chronometer certificate from the Neuchatel Observatory. Over the years, the company would continue to grow and offer unique watch features. Watches were exported to various parts of Europe and Asia. Cyma was one of the first companies to offer a waterproof watch in 1915. In 1923, Cyma became Switzerland's largest watch manufacturer. It also was among the early automatic watch makers in 1943. Cyma developed bi-directional automatic movement watches in 1957. Today Cyma remains one of Switzerland's largest watchmakers and offers more than 400 watch models for both men and women.
