History of Citizen

The company was originally founded in Japan in 1918 as the Shokosha Watch Research Institute. In 1924 the company debuted its Citizen pocket watch, and the company was later renamed Citizen Watch Company, Ltd. From the early years, Citizen made a push to make a name for itself all over the world. The hard work paid off, and Citizen is currently the largest watchmaker in the world.

Eco-Drive Watches

Most, though not all, Citizen watches are earth-friendly Eco-Drive watches. The Eco-Drive technology earned Citizen the Eco Mark award from the Japan Environmental Association, the first time this distinction was given to watch technology. Eco-Drive watches are powered by light, so that watch owners never need to change and discard old batteries. Light is absorbed through the face of the watch by a solar cell beneath the face, which changes the light into energy that is then stored in a rechargeable lithium-ion battery.
